What is a qualification race?
30. 10 2008

A few of our readers have noticed that a qualification race has been involved in the program of the World Ski Championship Liberec 2009. Not everybody knows exactly what this term means. We asked Michal Lamplot, OC sports section manager, for an explanation.
Qualification races will be carried out before the busiest races in cross country skiing for the first time in history- these races are namely 10 km C Ladies on Thursday February 19th and 15 km C Men on Friday February 20th. The aim is to reduce the number of contestants at the start. 250 men and 150 ladies have registered for this race in Liberec and therefore this event will become requisite measures. As mentioned above this rule will be set into action for the first time here in Liberec.
Qualification race for Ladies and Men will be held on Wednesday February 18th 2009. There are binding regulations how to select contestants and they apply as follows:
- Ladies with more than 120.00 FIS Distance points according to the last FIS point list (no.4, valid as of 6th February 2009) before the World Ski Championship have to come through the qualification.
- Men with more than 90.00 FIS Distance points according to the last FIS point list (no.4, valid as of 6th February 2009) before the World Ski Championship have to come through the qualification
Ten best performing athletes from each gender are qualified to the main race. Teams must submit entries for the qualification race 2 hours before Team Capitan’s Meeting on 17th February 2009 at the latest.
There are no more qualification races for other cross country disciplines at the Championship for other races.
