Editorial for April

18. 04 2008

Dear readers,

Let us present you a new arrangement of our official website of the FIS World Ski Championship Liberec 2009 that includes both new graphics and content. The modification eventuates 300 days before the Championship launch, but to be honest with you, it was not our intention. We simply reached a view, together with many of you, that current graphics has become uninteresting and incurious and most of all the structure by itself did not offer sufficiency of space for well arranged article structure. Life is change, after all. For those who like the old website better there is still archive available.
At the first sight you can see the structure of main sections has been divided into four logical parts – Welcome, People, Place and Current news. Though it may seem easy and you might think there is 1000 ways how to create a website lay-out, it is not that effortless. The thing which not everybody is aware of is that websites created for single-use purpose have a limited lifetime. At the beginning of its preparation you have to consider carefully how this website can proceed and go on after the Championship has finished. Naturally the content cannot be endlessly complemented; it all finishes with picture gallery and results. But who will take care of the maintenance_ Who will archive the documents and be in charge of the website_ And for how long should it be sustained afterwards_
I believe we have managed to improve the access to certain important sections. A programming engineer of Christian-Element applied so called “speed buttons”. We have increased the number of sections as well as some functions such as text size modification, possibility to print or article forwarding. We also plan on extending some sections, which will be made public just before the World Championship. The weather station will also be linked up later. Another interesting project that is worth mentioning is a connection of our web with an internet w.e.a r.e. TV, which utilizes a peak technology and image compression. The outcome shapes therefore high quality of presented clips.
Foreign visitors will hopefully welcome the implementation of German version of our website. We have followed up the number of visits to the website in the long term. For example in December 2007 there were 3 807 visitors who took a look at 76 645 pages, whereas approximately 62 000 pages were visited by Czech Republic attendants which represents 81 %, among other countries let us name the United States (2 150), Poland (1 900), Norway (890), Finland (750), Slovakia (630) and Great Britain (480). German users took a look at 3 900 pages, Austrian ones at 500 and Swiss visitors at 450 web pages. The situation changed rapidly in February 2008. Above all, the number of unique visits reached 16 600 and statistics shows that with average of 15 visited pages there were 543 836 look-overs altogether.  Roughly 430 000 pages were visited by Czech viewers (79%), but the figures of German speaking countries rose significantly – 29 000 from Germany, 4 300 from Austria and 3 400 from Switzerland (6,7 % altogether), thereby other website visitors where English is spoken such as Norway, Finland, USA and Great Britain were shaded a little. Naturally Slovaks and Poles probably read the Czech version. When we sum up all these statements and when we leave aside that statistics endure everything, the fact is that the German version should become handy. Though it means more work.
We do not expect that new time will come together with the new website, things that the Organizing Committee has been doing for Championship preparation will remain the same. Believe me I know what I talk about when I say it is a lot of demanding work. I am the first one reading emails that arrive to our letter box and are addressed to the Organizing Committee. I am accustomed to all sorts of absolute expression and obscene language and I know from my own experience that internet is swamped with rudeness, vulgarism and absurd slipslop due to the anonymity which it provides. Nevertheless some opinions contained in mails are irreproducible and unprintable babble, which are generally even not signed. I solve it with a DELETE button. On the contrary we highly appreciate ideas, recommendations and hints thought we could dispute them. These emails I forward both to the OC President and simultaneously to the spokesman, or to section managers who are responsible for the section the question is related to. And that will remain this way. During the remaining time we would like to publish information about skiing that are not to be found even on official websites of single sports events. We have decided to make public not only the program of WSC tournaments, but also the rules, that will be applied in races.
Quite a number of visitors and also TV viewers do not have an idea how ski jumping is evaluated, how judges rate and how points are counted. We received many questions regarding Nordic Combined during World Cups, people for example beat their brains why one of the competitions was called ski jumping sprint. And we could go on.
In this respect we will welcome both questions from the floor and contributors who would help us answer them. We are sure there are many experts among former athletes, coaches or referees. Let me speak to you in this manner and ask for help. Our website is part of the forthcoming World Championship and our goal is to make it first rate to provide you with complete information.
We were able to find photographers, who covered our reporter needs during this year’s World Cups and similarly we would be very appreciative if we could find new contributors and authors, who would offer their interesting information to be published. In these days already. Make yourselves heard.
Editorial should be short and brief. I never manage though. And I have so many other things to share with you, so hopefully next time. In this respect I have just realized I can reveal what the next web innovation will be. I will share the honour to write the editorials with other members of the OC. I am sure they all have information they would like to deliver to you.
Let me once again repeat we will welcome any constructive recommendations, ideas and views that could influence the level and quality of our website. Please let us know what you like and dislike and we will try to implement your suggestions and unravel your comments. By the way, we create the website for you, our dear sports friends.
Let’s be concerned with their creating together.
