Editorial for October 2008 alias I am content but at the same time I am disappointed

12. 10 2008

Let me express my feelings after eleven months in the office of the Organizing Committee FIS World Ski Championship Liberec 2009: satisfaction, joy, but also disappointment.

I am content that we have managed to cooperate well with the representatives of Liberec, with SSŽ and other subjects in terms of the venues Jested and Vesec. I was also very satisfied that together with the Czech Ski Association we managed to train teams of referees and other officials. I am also happy with our volunteers’ work especially with their increased proficiency and most of all I am pleased with their attitude to the Championship. I perceive that most volunteers realize that they participate in an event that does not compare to anything in the Czech Republic.

I am excited about the world’s best ski jumpers’ performance, both men’s and ladies’. Jakub Janda performed a great jump on the hills of Jested during the Summer Grand Prix finale and also during Czech Championship. Of course I am also very content with the achievements of our cross country skiers who took part in a race at Vesec venue performing on roller skates. It is also gratifying that our work is appreciated by Yoshiro Ita, the oldest FIS vice-president from Japan, who complimented us during his visit of Summer Grand Prix.

I am also very happy that my friend, ninety year old Milda Bělonožník, world’s known ski jumping hill constructer and also a mastermind of the ski jumping hills at Jested venue, saw beautiful races on artificial turf.

A disappointment to me was unfair information of the public about the World Ski Championship’s state of preparedness. The disillusion was mainly caused by the inability to inspire and encourage media for this unrepeatable even where we have a chance to present the Czech republic as a country where people can do great things and they are ready to achieve a lot in order to gain good results.

I remember that before the 1984 Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo in stormy Yugoslavia I managed to unite all sports journalists and reporters the way that the Olympic Games have become a celebration of sport and friendship not only for locals but also for visitors who had an unforgettable sports experience.

I am also disappointed with an attitude of some citizens of Liberec who mind that thanks to the Championship dormitories, tram lines, roads, infrastructure and many other things have been fixed. It is important to realize that it would not have been done without the Championship. I have an impression that some citizens would like to have Liberec as a village where nothing is being done and fixed. Well, but everybody has a right to express their own opinion. I still hope that these people will change their opinion and that they will be happy we are going to hold the FIS World Ski Championship Liberec 2009. And maybe they will become proud in the course of time!
