We must always have the competitors in sight

28. 02 2009 14:30:00

(Liberec, own) I have asked a nice young lady for an interview. Petra works at a medical blood centre in Ostrava and we talked about her volunteer work in the Halls of residence in Harsco. At the World Championships in Liberec she works as a chaperon.
* Petra, it says Chaperon on your accreditation. What does it mean_
Chaperons are people who wait at the finish line during competitions and catch competitors for the doping controls. There must be at least six chaperons for each race.
* What happens after you “catch” your competitor_
I give them a form to sign that they agree with the doping control. Within one hour of signing it they must be at the doping control which takes place in the Tipsport Arena. Both from Vesec as well as from Jested there are shuttle buses that take the athletes to the arena where we ait with them. There doping commissioners take them over and they go with them to the toilet.
* Are they with them even in the toilet_
Yes, the cabin has no door, the commissioner takes its place and the athlete must answer the call of nature in front of the commissioner.
* Nobody has a problem with that_ Well, they are probably used to it...
It was Virpi Kuitunen who surprised me. I accompanied her after the race where she finished in the 4th place and she couldn´t right there. She asked us to turn the tap on and it helped. A good old trick...
* When you registered as a volunteer, was this the kind of work you wanted_ How exactly did you get to this section_
I wanted to work in the Medical Section, that is medical support. I finished a nursing school. I could work as a nurse taking blood samples at the doping control. Unfortunately, there was a lack of chaperones, so I became one. But I am satisfied here.
* Does one need any special skills to do the job of a chaperon_
I don´t think so. Even no medical background is needed. However, some basic knowledge of English is required.
* Who else did you accompany apart from Virpi Kuitunen_
Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle, Aino Kaisa Saarinen yesterday.
* You move close to athletes, you must have an interesting story to tell us...
It was only yesterday with Aino Kaisa Saarinen. After finish she went to the mixed zone (designated area close to the finish where athletes get interviewed by journalists after competitions, author´s comment) and then she wanted to go to “chill out”. As we have to have them in sight at all times, I stood on a hill. Aino Kaisa was going in circles but suddenly she disappeared beyond a hill. So I set off after her. In a while she made another circle and she appeared behind me and she shouted at me smiling: “Hey you, are you training with me_“  It was quite fun. A friend of mine looked after the Japanese athletes yesterday. They don´t speak much English. She tried to explain to them that she must see them all the time. They didn´t understand her so she had to run all along the training course after them. Poor girl.
* So, it can be quite hard physically_
It is quite exhausting sometimes.
* What do you think you can take with you from this experience of a volunteer at the World Championships_
Definitely, an unforgettable introduction to the atmosphere of big competitions and the athletes themselves. It is an incredible experience. Meeting Marit Bjoergen, it is excellent. We can even chat with the athletes. For example, with Justyna Kowalczik. As I live close to the Polish border, I can speak little Polish and she was superb. An excellent woman.
Many thanks for the interview from Tereza Krtickova.
