I like helping people says Ingo Jensen

24. 02 2009 09:30:00

(Liberec, own) There was flurry of activity in the Jested Press Centre. The ski jumping leg of the Nordic combined had just ended and journalists sat down at their computers. There moved around them a smiling chap with a smart hat who exchanged a couple of words here and there with photographers present. To exaggerate a bit, we might say Ingo Jensen is a sort of their patron. Without him the world champions would probably run away from the winners podium and there would be no smiling winners in photographs under the newspaper headlines.

* What exactly is your job here at the Championships_
I work as coordinator for photographers. The main part of my job is to get them to places from which they can take the best shots. There are about 150 photographers and that´s quite a lot. Their presence must in no way disturb the competitions. So I am trying to combine those two things together: getting the best places for them while not disturbing the athletes in the least.

* It is clear that this is not the first time you´ve been in charge of something like this_
As regards winter sports I began at the World Championships in Alpine skiing 11 years ago. This year I have been chief of media section at the Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf and the third year I have been in charge of the section of the whole Tournament. Part of that job is coordinating photographers´ work and that´s why I am here in Liberec.

 * Where did you start_
It was in 1997 at a small tennis tournament. Other offers followed then and it wasn´t before long that I came to skiing. I also worked at the Olympic Games in Turin in 2006. I was in charge of the media in Pragelat where ski jumping was taking place.

* What is it that you like most in your job_
I like helping people. This is true twice as much with photographers as I am one of them myself. I know exactly what they need. I also like tackling challenges in my job as there are plenty of those. It often happens that the security services don´t want to allow photographers to enter a certain space as they think it is not necessary. But I know it is important, so we try to find a reasonable solution together.

* And how do you like it here in Liberec_
I like it here very much, I am very happy to be here, that is on the hills. In general it is very nice here and meeting new people and being in a new environment is a pleasant change for me. There is a lot of work here; the organizers have strict security services. It is a challenge, you need to find quick solutions, sometimes you need to shout at someone, but that´s part of it. There´s always a solution in the end and I feel good about it.

* What do you say about the masses of snow here_
Well, this is part of it all, isn´t it_ These are winter sports; you count with snow, even if it can complicate the situation a bit. The competitions get postponed, sometimes chaos prevails which I personally like. It means I have something to do. No snow means no work.

* Do you have a favourite athlete here_
I cheer on the Austrian ski jumper Wolfgang Loitzl. I dare say I am a sort of his talisman. This year I had already met him at a competition where no one predicted that he might win. And he did it! So, when I met him before the competition yesterday, I said to him: “Don´t worry about anything, you´ll win because I am here.” And he really won. We saw each other again at the winners ceremony and Wolfgang told me with a smile: “So, next time again, Ingo!” I must say that all athletes are very nice, full of emotions. You can see they like being here and they do their best to win. I am glad I can support them here and that I can be part of it all.

Many thanks for the interview from Klara Honzikova.
