Being second doesn´t mean losing

(Liberec, own ) Another competition day brought fans from all corners of the world to the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships Liberec 2009. The competitions take place not only in the white trail. Fans from different countries compete too. As the tradition has it, you can see and hear the Scandinavian fans most. Today both in the white trail as well as along the course a contest between two countries was taking place: Norway versus Poland. While it was the Polish competitor winning the race, for me it was the Norwegian fans who beat the pants off everyone else.

Quietly I joined a group of ten Norwegian fans; very soon one of them noticed me there and began to offer me bits of dried lamb meat cutting them off a meat leg hanging at his belt. A delicacy for meat lovers, definitely. Apart from traditional Viking helmets and bells this group of fans dresses up in costumes on which a badge Liberec 2009 is not missing. When you bump into women dressed in red and men in black sweaters with a Norwegian design and Norwegian flags hanging everywhere, singing and enjoying themselves then it is them – the friendly Norwegians. “We came yesterday and we will stay until Saturday next week. Of course, we will come to see other competitions too,” said a married couple from Hetland. Their answers as to the place in which Steira of Norway would finish in today´s pursuit were not the same. The lady believed in gold, he husband counted on more modest bronze. Kristin Stoermer Steira came second.

The Norwegians vehemently make it known that they come from a country promised to skiing. In the refreshment tent they created their own “base”. On a white piece of cloth there hang a photo of Norwegian female competitors and National flags.
Surely, every athlete would be happy to have such faithful fans.
