Kasper presents Medals

01. 03 2009 10:00:00

(Liberec – own) At approximately 19:30, punctual as you can be considering the snow covered, spectator crowded streets, Gian Franco Kasper, FIS President, walks up the steps of City Hall in the Medal Plaza for another in a long line of Medal presentations.  Quietly he stands to one side surveying the growing crowd with country flags waving back and forth.  The most prevalent being the Norwegian flag.  That evening's dignitaries and winning teams arrive and he greets them with kind words and congratulations as they walk into City Hall for a pre-awards reception.  Kasper remains at his his predetermined post on the steps.

Gian Franco Kasper, President of FIS, only the fourth President since its 1924 inception, has been in Liberec since opening the 2009 World Nordic Ski Championships February 18.  Serving FIS for more than 33 years and as FIS President since 1998 after serving as Secretary-General since 1975, Kasper has seen a number of Medal Presentations and each of them is unique in its own way.  The award venue has been held at many locations and this one is one of the most beautiful with City Hall brightly lit in the background.

Time waits for no one as the City Hall clock above the steps illuminates 20:00 and the athletes are lined up in order of the finish ready to walk to the Medal platform.  Kasper takes his place in line as well and following a video of the event shown on a large screen, the group is introduced to all attending the Medal Presentation.  After the medals are presented, trophies given and each athlete has shaken Kasper's hand, a winning nation's song nation played, their flags raised followed by a beautiful fireworks display, FIS President Gian Franco Kasper quietly slips away in the crowd and is gone for another day only to return 24 hours later to do present medals once again.
