The last gold medal battle

01. 03 2009 08:40:00

(Press Release) Norwegian competitor Petter Northug will start in the last race of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships Liberec 2009 with starting number two, but he is the favourite number one. The native of Strindheim, the second men in the World Cup standings, can run marathon as well as sprints.

The king discipline is rarely held in the WC. Sweden Anders Södergren was the winner of the last 50 km free Holmenkollen race in season 2007/2008 in Oslo. Also he is in the starting field but according to unofficial information he feels sick and probably will not start. It was Odd-Bjoern Hjelmeset from Norway who won 50 km classic race two years ago in Sapporo but he is not going to start tomorrow. The last “big” marathon in free style was won by Italian Giorgio Di Centa, in Olympic race in Pragelato. Also his team mate Pietro Piller Cottrer belongs to the favourites.

As well as Ladies in their 30 km race, the Men have the opportunity to change their skies for four times.
