Demong takes another gold for the United States

28. 02 2009 17:25:00

(Liberec, own) Today the American team again regretted the fault that almost surely had deprived the team of a gold medal in Nordic combined. A starting bib left behind had spoilt their chance of becoming absolute winners among the Nordic combined contestants. However, today Bill Demong made up for everything he had caused. Probably he will have to split up the gold medal he gained in the Nordic combined event on HS 134 Hill and a 10 km race among those whom he had deprived of their victory of Thursday.  Pavel Churavy showed a very good performance after finishing in an excellent 8th place. Even though he had to borrow his skis from Martin Koukal.
After the ski jumping leg of the competition Bill Demong started in the 8th place 52 seconds behind (for more details about the ski jumping leg see HERE). The run wasn´t decided until the finish and it was Demong and German runner Kircheisenem who put up a battle for the first place on the finish line. Only a couple of metres from the finish line Demong surged ahead and left his rival behind. “Today´s event serves as satisfaction for the team event when I had left my starting bib behind. My team backed me up, I´ve made up for it,” Demong was filled with joy. The winner of the ski jumping leg Lamy Chappuise of France stayed behind in the cross-country run; however he reached the bronze medal.
One can almost talk about a success of his life in the case of Pavel Churavy. He started the cross-country run from a 12th position and he was more than 1 minute behind the leading competitor. Although snow was slushy in the Cross-Country Ski Area Vesec he managed very well in the adverse conditions and came eight. It is his best place at the World Championships and it only proves his perfect form this year. “I am satisfied, it went very well on the skis today,” Churavy said for Czech TV. He admitted he had borrowed his skis from Martin Koukal. “It was a deal that he would lend me his skis in case I was in a promising place,” he added.
A great favourite of today´s event Anssi Koivuranta didn´t enter the race which was a big disappointment for everyone. Although taking part in the ski jumping leg he finally went down with an illness he allegedly had brought from Val di Dentra in Italy.
The Nordic combined event on the large hill and on the 10 km course ended the Nordic combined part of the Championships in Liberec today. The Czech national colours didn´t do badly but they didn´t gain any of the long-expected medal position. Among those performing very well was not only Pavel Churavy but also Vodsedalek and Slavik
