(Liberec – own) The total of 211 pages of presentation and many hours of proceedings were waiting for the International Ski federation representatives as well as for APF and EBU members on their visit to Liberec, the venue of coming World Championship, where the Coordination Group Meeting was held.
Two days’ meeting of FIS, APF and EBU was noted for positive atmosphere. Members of each section presented during proceedings their experience from recent World Cups and as well as progress in WSC preparations. “It was a very brave decision to carry out the World Cups if we take into account what weather conditions you were facing and we appreciate that you did make this decision. It revealed us a lot and it will surely help us all to prepare a wonderful Championship”, said at the beginning Sarah Lewis, FIS secretary-general.
Present condition of both venues was presented during the meeting and forthcoming set-ups in oncoming months were discussed. We had a certification committee a few days ago in Vesec and as far as I was informed, the commission was very satisfied with the venue, there are only small changes necessary, but besides that it is a high quality venue with relatively difficult course,” said Sarah Lewis. Also the ski jumping venue Ještěd has its unique atmosphere, especially thanks to artificial lighting, that will be used during ski jumping next year too.
Everybody expected that discussions would be related to accommodation. Representatives of this section demonstrated change for the better. A significant progress has been achieved in negotiations with hotel-keepers from all over the region. The section manager made all guests familiar with the general conception, like where different groups that are going to participate in the WSC, will be accommodated. FIS representatives had the opportunity to take a look at dormitories in Harcov, where mostly athletes will be put up. “These are gorgeous spaces with well furnished and equipped rooms. Your students must be very satisfied,” said secretary-general.” I like the idea that sportsmen will have a chance to amuse themselves in the evenings since there is a bowling centre, gym and other facilities in the dorms. Coaches will probably not be happy about it, but athletes find it important to have a chance to relax, too,” added Lewis.
EBU, a company dealing with television and radio broadcasting, also had its representative in Liberec. Ingolfur Hannesson stated that 500 employees of TV companies will come to the venue. And all of them must be accommodated separately which means 500 single rooms being at disposal for them. “We have already achieved success when negotiating with hoteliers. Some issues are still open, but we have introduced to FIS representatives further suggestions how to solve this situation,” said Kateřina Neumannová, president of the Organizing Committee.
And what have the FIS representatives got knowledge of?
- there will be as many as 10 000 places for spectators at the stands
- there will be more than 60 special containers that are designed to be a Zone of Interior for athletes
- We have been working on supplying snow to have a sufficient amount of it in case we would have to face unfavorable weather like this year. Snow guns are ready to be used, we will spray snow in order to have it as a reserve and we will have all authorizations if it was necessary to transport snow.
- 100 000 viewers can theoretically come to the Vesec venue during the WSC
- Relaunched websites will be in operation within a few days. They will be different not only graphically but they should be more user-friendly and the content will be different too.
- There were more than 500 accredited people in Liberec during the World Cups
- The Organizing Committee has more than 1400 volunteers at disposal, 1000 of which are active; the outermost one comes from Canada.
“There is a lot of work behind you all,” compiled in the Coordination Meeting on Tuesday forenoon Sarah Lewis, FIS secretary-general. “Now we have to work on details and technical circumstances with joint forces, further particulars will be discussed in the congress in Cape Town, JAR. I will see you there at the end of May,” she made a conclusion at the very end of the meeting.
After having evaluated the situation, members of the OC draw a conclusion that the meeting was very fruitful and pleasant and at the same time instructive as well. Kateřina Neumannová appreciated professionalism of presentations created by the OC members reflecting different sections. She stated that the FIS was satisfied with the state of up to now preparations in general. “They gave us credit for our previous work and as an acknowledgement of this meeting’s success they expressed appreciation” said Kateřina Neumannová. „It is a positive impulse for our further demanding work that is ahead of us. We cannot get stunted and have to keep working,” she said.
