The cross-country part of the Nordic combined 10 km mass start was won by American competitor Todd Lodwick in the Cross-Country Ski Area Vesec in the morning. It was to continue with a two-round jumping contest on the medium hill in Jested. However, weather was against it and strong winds and continuous snowfall prevented the event to be finished.

The greatest support for competitors with the smallest chances

The 10 km men qualification race on the opening day of the Championships qualified ten best competitors for the 15 km classical technique event which will be held on Friday. On the start line there were also skiers from countries nobody would link with cross-country skiing such as Ireland, Luxembourg, and from overseas such as Nepal, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela or Kenya. And it was exactly these athletes that most captured spectators´ attention.

Music legend Deep Purple crowned the Opening Ceremony

There it is! The Nordic World Ski Championships were officially declared open yesterday. The ice floor of the Tipsport Arena in Liberec was transformed into a festival hall for a while and both fans and athletes could watch a remarkable spectacle. The evening show dazzled spectators with colour lasers beams of most diverse shapes including those of Jested, skiers and the Championships logo. A ski jumper flew over the spectators´ heads several times and a cross-country female runner floated in the air above the stage for several minutes. Drummers and the fiery performance that followed also lit up the arena floor full of volunteers.
