Vesec witnessed a great battle for the championship title; Martin Koukal was a great surprise

2 x 15 km pursuit Men´s event in Vesec today was in the spirit of a true contest till the very last moment. There were more than 90 men runners on the start line, including four Czech athletes.  There was disappointment over Lukas Bauer´s result:  he didn´t have a good start but kept around the first place in half of the race only to drop to the 25th place in the end. But the disappointment was counterbalanced by an excellent performance by Martin Koukal who finished with one of the best times since his victory in Val di Fiemme in 2003. Northug of Norway became winner after an exhausting race, the second to cross the finish line way Swede Sodergren, the third place went to Di Centa of Italy after Lagkov of Russia suffered a fall. There were more than 17,200 paying spectators in Vesec and other accredited persons.

Loitzl of Austria became world champion on medium hill, Koudelka finished 9th

A great drama took place already on the medium hill in Jested in the first competition at the World Championships ski jumping. The Austrian team had the biggest reasons to celebrate in front of full tribunes. Wolfgang Loitzl gained gold, his countryman Gregor Schlierenzauer silver and bronze goes to Switzerland thanks to Simon Ammann. Among the Czech jumpers Roman Koudelka was the best and finished in a good 9th place.

The gold goes to Poland after another breath-taking race

Justyna Kowalczyk with starting number two set off on the course in the Cross-Country Ski Area Vesec today and she proved her excellent form all through the race. In a fantastic finish she finally made it to the lead position of the event, 2x7.5 km C+F Ladies with the fastest time 40:55.3.2 after she got ahead of Kristin Steira of Norway who was behind by 1.8 s on the finish line. The world champion from the Thursday´s Ladies event Saarinen of Finland finished in the third place.

The first third of the Championships is over

It is as if today that G.F. Kasper declared the Championships in Liberec open; now we have been through the first third. Unlike in an ice hockey game, there is no break for the Organizing Committee to take some rest. The wheels of competitions and accompanying programme just roll on. The schedule for today includes a Ladies´ event (7.5 km C pursuit + 7.5 km F) and Men´s ski jumping on HS 100 Hill. Ski jumps will be preceded by yesterday´s postponed qualification. It has stopped snowing in Liberec, so it may look as if the snow calamity may be over. But has there been any calamity at all_

A day with Elan

The theme of Day Three at the Championships was Slovakia. From morning to evening a presentation of our eastern neighbour took place on Regional Plaza on Friday; visitors could taste traditional food, cheese and buy Slovak souvenirs.

Lukas Bauer was the star of the evening

Crowded Medal Plaza last night saw three winners ceremonies. However, all other athletes whatever their places were overshadowed by Lukas Bauer who came for his silver medal in today´s 15 km race.

Vesec saw its first big competition, Bauer has silver

Liberec, 20 February 2009. In continuous snowfall and unbelievably thunderous atmosphere the 15 km classic technique Men race took place in the Cross-Country Ski Area Vesec. More than 14,500 spectators created a truly excellent atmosphere making everyone race forward. Lukas Bauer fought for the gold medal till the very last moment. In the end he couldn´t match the fastest Andrus Veerpalu who was faster by six seconds. Still, enthusiastic audience thanked Lukas for a beautiful race. Matti Heikkinen of Finland was the third to cross the finish line and was 16 seconds behind the winner.

Van from U.S. is the first women´s world champion in ski jumping

Women´s ski jumping has made its debut at the World Championships. Lindsay Van became the first ever women´s ski jumping world champion. Silver went to Ulrike Grassler from Germany and bronze to Norway thanks to Anette Sagen. It wasn´t going well for Czech jumpers; only Michaela Dolezalova made it to the second round and finished in the split 27th place.

So, it all began!
