Scandinavians _ men as well as women _ beat the rest of the world in sprint

The Finnish winning team Saarinen – Kuitunen took the lead from the very start. Competitors from Sweden, Italy and Japan fought for other medal positions. The Swedish women finished in the second place and the third place went to Italy in the end. The men´s final in Liberec offered a dramatic contest till the very last metres. Jauhojaervi of Finland was the first to reach the start of the finish zone. However, Hattestad of Norway rushed past him with powerful strokes of his arms and became the king of sprint in Liberec. Together with Johan Kjoelstad he gained his second gold after his triumph in sprint.

A battle on the finish line

The Norwegian, German and Finnish competitors took on one another in the last metres of the finish area.  Ola Vigen Hattestad proved to have most strength in the finish and he took gold with Johan Kjoelstad. Long minutes the Jury took decided about silver. In the end they had to incline towards what one could see through the Czech Television cameras, namely that Axel Teichmann managed to get with his last step and his leg stretched forward ahead of Sami Jauhojaervi of Finland who ran in pair with Ville Nousiainen. We have to add that Tobias Angerer was in team with Teichmann.

Virpi finally gains gold

Virpi Kuitunen together with Aino Kaisou Saarinen gained gold medals in team sprint at the 47th FIS Nordic World Ski Championships Liberec 2009. Anna Olsson and Lina Andersson of Sweden came second, Marianna Longa and Arianna Follis of Italy came third. Our Ivana Janeckova and Kamila Rajdlova finished in the 10th place out of 16 teams on the start line.

Camping in winter is a great adventure

Have you ever thought of camping in winter_ If not, come to the Cross-Country Ski Area Vesec. It is there that the Czech Tourist Club has organized the first public winter camping at the World Championships. Everyone can take part in it at their own peril. You need a tent, a sleeping bag or possibly other equipment. This kind of accommodation is nothing new; Czech tourists have been using it for 48 years.

The Norwegians took control of Medal Plaza

With the Men´s and Ladies´ winners ceremony in sprint the traditional evening programme continued after one-day break on Dr. Edvard Benes Square. Large numbers of fans from abroad took part in it; the biggest audience among them was from Norway. The usual moderator of the Championships Leos Mares guided everyone through the evening. Traditional fireworks and a concert followed.

Flowers. Discreet but important complements of the Championships

The City Hall of Liberec, Vesec, Jested, Tipsport Arena, Main Press Centre, Hotel Zlaty Lev. These are the places which have been freshened up with flowers during the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec. Florists from Metamorphosis flower shop in Prague spend several hours a day arranging flowers. All flower decorations are made in the spirit of spring even if winter hasn´t finished yet.

No medal for the Czech Republic. Men´s sprint was a definite success despite that

Men´s and Ladies´ sprint events in the Cross-Country Ski Area Vesec today brought as well as didn´t bring surprises at the same time. While women representing Czech colours failed, Ales Razym was a pleasant surprise. First he made his way through the qualification from which the other Czech athlete Kozisek dropped out and he also mastered the semi-final in an excellent manner. In the finals his skis didn´t run well but still he literary fought for a better place. His sixth place at the World Championships is Razym´s best ranking so far.

Arianna Follis and Ola Vigen Hattestad won sprints

In an exhausting sprint series Arianna Follis of Italy had most strength of all. She has been doing well in the Czech Republic. She brought home precious trophies from Nove Mesto as well as from Prague Tour de Ski. Surprisingly, silver in sprint goes to Kikkan Randal of the United States, bronze goes to Pirjo Mranen of Finland. In Men´s sprint Ales Razym fought his way among the best six athletes. Unfortunately he finished last in the final, in spite of that it is a great success for Czech skiing. Ola Vigen Hattestad of Norway won, his countryman Johan Kjoelstad came second and Nikolaj Morilov of Russia came third.

The winners ceremony or a glance behind the scenes

The moment the last ski crosses the finish line or touches the ground the state of nervousness is over both for competitors and spectators. But for the team responsible for awarding medals and trophies the biggest stress begins one hour before the winners ceremony on Medal Plaza.
