Another day under the baton of Norway

Although the organizers of the Championships have designated some days as national days, basically every day is a “Norwegian Day”. The reason is simple: Norwegian fans have taken a total control of the Championships. Every day basically belongs to them.

Today´s ski jumping qualification postponed until Friday

Adverse windy weather today (Thursday) forced JURY to interrupt the Men´s ski jumping qualification on HS 134 Hill.  Although most of the jumpers completed their jumps, the Committee controlling the whole event decided to postpone it until the following day. As it is usually the case with ski jumping safety of competitors was the main reason of this move.

The Japanese team celebrates success in Liberec; Czech team takes an excellent 6th place

Failure, error and disappointment of one competitor may have helped others to joy. Bill Demon’s sport tragedy when he put his starting number into his ski jumping suit and couldn´t find it afterward to discover it again only a couple of minutes after being disqualified may have helped the Japanese Nordic combined team. Japan celebrates its first medal place in Liberec. Czech quartet comprising Ales Vodsedalek, Miroslav Dvorak, Tomas Slavik a Pavel Churavy finished in an excellent sixth place.

Tears of joy and tears of sadness after 4 x 5 km relay Ladies

This day has probably been the one most filled with emotions at the Championships in Liberec. First, it was Bill Demong losing his medal hopes when he couldn´t find his starting number (and was disqualified because of that), after which in a very dramatic competition in the Cross-Country Ski Area Vesec Marthe Kristoffersen lost an almost certain second place in 4 x 5 km relay Ladies. She finally got the so- called “potato medal” for the Norwegian team and after crossing the finish line she wasn´t able to hold back her tears. One of the winning women, Roponen of Finland cried too. These were tears of joy over her gold place.

The ski jumping leg won by French Nordic combined contestants, Czech team in the 7th place

After the first leg of the Nordic combined team event the French quartet takes the lead. The Austrian team will start the afternoon cross-country leg from the second position 8 seconds behind and the current third place belongs to the Finnish team which will start 8 seconds behind the Austrian one. Czech contestants showed 4 even jumps and they are 43 seconds in the 7th place behind the leading French team.

Finnish competitors won the relays

With the last kilometre to the finish a fight was taking place behind the leading athlete Aino Kaisa Saarinen  among the German, Norwegian and Swedish relay competitors. In the last long uphill Kalla caught up with Nystad while Kristoffersen was running ahead with a sufficient lead. It looked that only a fight over bronze would take place. However, in the finish area the Norwegian skier “flaked out”,  Claudia Nystad put together all her strength and took silver for Germany with Charlotte Kalla coming close behind her. The young Martha Kristoffersen was left in tears. The whole of Norway is sad with her.

Even Eda the rooster got accreditation

Not that it would be that easy to get accreditation at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships Liberec 2009. By no means! But the organizers had to make an exception in one case. An official accreditation was awarded to Eda the rooster.
