Welcome to Liberec

24. 01 2009 19:00:00

When the decision was made in 2005 that the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 2009 would be hosted by Liberec there were shouts of joy not only among those who were directly involved in the success but among all skiers in the Czech Republic too. As the Czech Republic is a country of skiers, the joy was really great and it was celebrated mainly on the main square of the City of Liberec.

We have gone through four years of intensive preparations and the finishing touches are just being made. Liberec is getting ready for its big international premiere, for its status of an international city of skiing.
The forthcoming Championships are going to be the biggest sports event to have ever taken place in the history of the independent Czech Republic, actually in the history of Czechoslovakia too. It also serves as recognition of successes achieved by Czech skiers in all ski disciplines in the past and present. It is an interesting fact that the Czech Ski Association belongs to the oldest ski associations in the word.
Choosing the City of Liberec and Jizerske Mountains (Jizerské hory) was not a random act. Thanks to its location and terrain the Jizerske Mountains belong to most popular ski locations and local so-called Jizerska Artery (Jizerská magistrála) is without any doubt the main ski route in the whole region, not only used by Czech cross-country skiers but also by those from all Europe. It is also the place where one of the oldest and mass competitions in Europe takes place – Patria Direct Jizerska 50.
Liberec itself offers, apart from sports opportunities, a lot of cultural and social events and it charms its visitors with unique architecture reflecting its markedly Sudeten character.
The City of Liberec is situated in a basin under the Jested Ridge; it has developed from an original settlement built nearby a river crossing on the so-called Zahvodska Path linking Bohemia and Lusatia. In the 16th century there grew cloth making and woollen cloth making from which textile industry developed later. Nowadays the City of Liberec (with more than 100,000 inhabitants) attracts its visitors all year round. In spring blossoming rhododendrons and azaleas in gardens and parks give the city a magical nature while in winter Liberec becomes an important winter sports resort. Being situated in the centre of recreational areas, it is an ideal starting point to reach Jizerske Mountains and the ridge of Jested Mountains (Jestedske pohori). Among historical monuments the neo-Renaissance City Hall is worth mentioning; it dates back to 1893 and its main spire is 65 metres high and dominates the whole city.
The approaching FIS Nordic World Ski Championships Liberec 2009 can thus promise a unique spectacle and experiences not only for skiers but for spectators as well. If the Czech Republic is considered to be the heart of Europe, than from February 18 to March 1 it will definitely become the heart of the ski world.
