Taking a walk to the FIS WCS 2009 venues

12. 08 2008

It does not seem that FIS World Championship is somewhere in the world carried out in similar surroundings like the one in Liberec region. Let’s set out on a trip to the places, where there will be held along with regular ski jumping also a world premiere of women’s ski jumping- let us take you to ski jumping venue Ještěd.

The first ski jumping hill was built in Jizerské Mountains as early as hundred years ago. The venue got its sport appearance on the North slope under the cable railway fifty years ago.

Spectators on the main stand will watch ski jumpers performing at their best, but also people taking a cable car will be able to see them on their way up and down the hill. There is a gorgeous view from the restaurant situated on top of the mountain peak that has windows facing the slope. Guests can see to venue from many other places in Liberec region, but not such a detail.

The ones who want to walk from the cable railway departure station in Horní Hanychov following so called „blue path signs“ will pass both hundred years old and modern houses. The path leading to the peak you need to take is called „Hofmanova cesta“ and it can easily take you to the ski jumping centre. The steep road that climbs up the hill offers beautiful views at the city.

On your way up the hill you are going to be surprised – there is a coasting path from the 70´s; unfortunately only ruins of it remained. They represent remains of sledgers´ fame. It was not as famous as the one that had been built hundred years ago in the very same place not far away from a former cross country track, which is also no longer used. This time-honored path belongs to history of sport in Hanychov.

Steep and sunny forest road leads to an intersection called “Mariánská studánka”, where a tragic car accident happened thirty years ago and four woodlanders involved in the accident died in the fire. Ban of traffic together with a modern sculpture advises the entry to modern venue. After a short walk you can already see the slope together with part of the venue offering you two perspectives – one of them is through a tunnel going underneath the slope. A young skier had died in this place before the tunnel was build up when she unfortunately hit a snowplough.

If you stand in this place you can enjoy a view at the whole ski jumping venue, lifts, cable railway as well as the monument of the hill rising loftily towards the sky. The magnificence is emphasized when you take a look at the city with the Jizerské Mountains scenery.

Record-holder path goes along the forest. Let us explain you what that means - some people take a trip to the peak once or more times a day to break a historical record in number of climbs per year. When you want to enjoy beautiful view, you are recommended to go to the restaurant terrace. On your way back you only go down to the cable car department station, take so called “Beranova cesta” and keep going all to way to tram station.

Stroll to these beautiful surroundings of modern venue will comfort those seeking cognition and physical activity, mainly children. But this trip will not be strenuous for seniors either. If you take pleasure in beautiful views, the 4 km trip can take you a few hours though.

Should you wish to find out more about this region, come to information centre where you can get many advertising brochures and also hear a short lecture about Ještěd. You can also book a service of your personal guide there. (Milan Turek, Horská 16, 460 14 Liberec 14, cell 603 328 699).
