Pride of the medal plaza is the town hall

The ceremony for the winners of the World Ski Championship races held in Liberec 2009, including the prize giving ceremony, will be situated in the historical down town– at the main plaza, one of the oldest locations in the city, named by Edvard Beneš. All important moments in the town´s history took place here.

The view point of the dr. Edvard Beneš square and one of the nicest buildings of the city represents a huge new renaissance city hall built between 1888-1993, which is the symbol of its welfare and economical and cultural development. It resembles in many aspects the city hall of Vienna, because the designer involved in this construction was the one who built townhall in Vienna-Mr. Franz Richter von Neumann.

The tower of the city hall is 65 m high. At the roof level there is a clock and underneath it there are two armigers holding the shield of the city. Frontal face with wide decoration and beautiful windows is supplemented by an impressive entry with metal-tip grid. On the top of the tower there is a statue of knight Roland, the protector of the municipal and commercial rights. It is 2,2 m high and its weight is 138 kg.

Many politicians and historical personalities used to deliver their speech from the balcony of the town hall: the Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz Joseph I, the president of Czechoslovakia Edvard Beneš, Adolf Hitler and after the period of the communist chieftains Václav Havel as well.

Celebrations of the successful candidacy “Liberec 2009” were held there. Medal plaza will belong to best athletes During WSC competing at both Vesec and Ještěd venues.

The region of Liberec

The region of Liberec is spread in the north of the Czech Republic and it includes territory of three former districts – Liberec, Jablonec nad Nisou and Česká Lípa. The city of Liberec is the biggest among them with its population of 100 000 inhabitants.

Sport fans come to this town since they can find perfect conditions there. It provides facilities for nearly all kinds of sports you can think of. The most popular one in the region is probably biking; cross country skiing and down hill skiing prevail in winter.

Tourist district Jizerské hory is known for its beautiful landscape, we can name for example Krkonoše, Kozákov and Ještěd Mountain as well as Prachovské skály of the Czech paradise, extraordinary underground lake in the caves of Bozkov, castles or manors (Grabštejn, Lemberk, Frýdlant, Sychrov, Frýdštejn), basilica in Hejnice and Liberec with its diverse architecture and historical monuments etc. Spas play its important role since they are sought by locals but also by visitors from neighbouring countries.

Cultural life is offered to the visitors in many theatres, museums, galleries, castles and manors.
